International Bat Appreciation Day was established in 1992 in honor of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Initiated by the International Bat Conservation Organization, this day aims to combat misinformation and promote the protection of these unique animals.
Bats are nocturnal mammals and true “night-time sanitarians,” consuming up to 2,000 insects per night. This helps reduce pest populations without the need for toxic chemicals.
About 25 species of bats inhabit Ukraine, and all of them are listed in the Red Book. Bats also play a vital role as pollinators and help restore tropical forests by dispersing seeds over long distances.
They are also bioacoustic indicators of environmental health, as their population numbers respond quickly to environmental changes, pollution, or climate shifts.
Kuialnytskyi National Nature Park is home to many bat species.
