The blooming season for feather grass has arrived at the Kuialnytskyi National Nature Park. This is one of the most famous and valuable plants of the Ukrainian steppe.
Feather grass serves as a natural indicator of well-preserved, pristine steppe, signaling that the land has not been plowed or overgrazed. Its dense sod and developed root system stabilize the soil, protecting it from water and wind erosion—a crucial function in arid steppe conditions.
Steppe areas covered in feather grass resemble a shimmering silver sea swaying in the southern wind. Due to its aesthetic beauty, blooming feather grass has long been known as the “silver of the Scythian steppes,” a symbol of nature’s grandeur. ✨
All species of feather grass growing in Ukraine are listed in the Red Book and are legally protected. Preserving the feather grass steppe is vital for protecting unique ecosystems and supporting the biodiversity of our region.
