[ Historical Significance ]

Historical and Cultural value

The first settlements in the Kuialnyk Estuary area date back to the beginning of the 1st millennium BCE. After the estuary became separated from the sea, the salinity of the water began to rise. As a result, during the Middle Ages, the estuary was a major salt production site, the remains of which can still be seen near the city of Odessa and the village of Korsuntsi. In 1833, a famous mud resort was founded, now known as the Pirogov Clinical Sanatorium (Kuyalnik Resort). During your trip, we recommend exploring the historic buildings of the sanatorium, which, unfortunately, are currently in a state of disrepair and in need of renovation. In addition, while traveling through the Kuialnytskyi National Nature Park, you can visit the local history museum in the village of Illinka, see the oldest pear tree in Ukraine near the village of Adamivka (which has the status of a botanical natural monument of local significance), and the Church of St. John the Theologian in the village of Severynivka (an architectural monument of local significance).

The park’s territory is also a resort of national significance. Many people visit the Kuialnyk Estuary for health and wellness purposes. Mud therapy, cycling, birdwatching, and the area’s unique historical and cultural heritage offer significant potential for tourism development in the Kuialnytskyi National Nature Park. The Kuialnyk Estuary is also known for being the lowest point in Ukraine. To promote tourism within the park, ecological trails, tourist routes, and recreational areas are being developed and equipped, where every visitor can learn about the unique features of this protected area and enjoy a walk in nature.
