[ The Influence of the Black Sea ]

The region's maritime climate

The Kuialnyk Estuary is climatically part of the northwestern Black Sea region and is influenced by it. The surface of the sea basin heats up and cools down more slowly than the land surface, so in winter the Black Sea contributes to an increase in air temperature in the adjacent land areas, and in summer, due to its cooling effect, to a decrease. In winter, the influence of the warm Black Sea extends 140–280 km inland into Ukraine and reduces the continentality of the climate.

Weather conditions

Solar radiation plays the primary role in determining the temperature regime. The coldest month for the coastal zone is January (with average monthly temperatures ranging from -3 °C to -1 °C), and the warmest is July (from 21 °C to 23 °C). The highest amount of precipitation occurs in June, and the lowest in March and February. Precipitation during the warm season significantly exceeds that of the cold season. Meteorological conditions during the cold season (December–February) in the northwestern part of the Black Sea are determined by prevailing northwesterly and northerly winds. At this time, due to a powerful stationary anticyclone, storm winds reach their maximum in both duration and intensity. In spring, the wind direction partially shifts to the south, and the frequency of northern winds decreases. In summer, periods of calm are observed, and wind speeds of 0 to 5 m/s prevail.

Overall, the climate of the territory where the Kuialnytskyi National Nature Park is located is an example of a temperate maritime climate with subtropical characteristics. Winters are mild and short, springs are prolonged, summers are hot, and autumns are warm and long. The best seasons to visit the Park are spring and autumn.
